Dealing with Dry Hair

Written by Charlotte Wood (last updated February 18, 2022)

I've always had to deal with dry hair, especially since I live in a drier climate. When moisture is harder to retain, you often have to deal with dry skin and unfortunately dry hair. Are there any good ways to deal with dry hair? Can you make dry hair look good? The answer to both of those questions is yes and you just need to have the right know-how and tricks to make even dry hair look great!

Dry hair can manifest itself in a handful of different ways including split ends and it's brittle and breakable. Both of those dry hair symptoms you usually want to avoid and with damaged hair, it's sometimes hard to bring it back to a healthy condition. With dry hair, one of the things you want to do is to wash your hair with a moisturizing shampoo and you should also use conditioner. Most hair care brands have some form of hydrating shampoo and conditioner. You'll need to do some trial and error tests to make sure that you're really using what works best with your hair. If you're unsure about what to try or what will work best for you, ask your hair stylist for tips and advice for how to wash and treat your dry hair.

You can usually pull off any style you want even with dry hair (although the results aren't usually as good as with healthy hair). What you want to keep in mind, however, is that the longer you don't treat dry hair, the longer it will take for you to fix it and your hair will become more damaged. If treatment is your goal then there are a few ways to go about restoring the health of your hair. You should stop coloring it (at least for a little while) so your hair can have time to recover and regain its natural health. You should also try to avoid blow drying your hair as much because the intense, directed heat of the blow dryer is very damaging to your hair. If your hair is in an especially bad condition, you can talk to your hair stylist for additional tips and product advice.

Dealing with dry hair can be a pain, but it's definitely worth it in the end. It's always better to have healthy hair than dry hair and sometimes you need to take special steps to achieve that health. Your hair will usually go with any style even if your hair is dry, but if you can, you should definitely try and treat dry hair so it's healthy. With healthy hair, it will be much more likely to work with you in achieving what you want!
