Do I Need a Conditioner?

Written by Charlotte Wood (last updated October 4, 2021)

There are so many different hair products ranging from simple shampoos to specialized gels and waxes, all of which aim to create a defined look. One of the time-proven products is hair conditioner; you hear a bunch of different things about this particular product ranging from "use it everyday" to "never use conditioner." Conditioner is actually an excellent supplement to your hair treatment routine and you can buy it according to what you need.

The fact is, conditioner is not a necessary product that you absolutely have to have. When I was little, I thought that you had to put in conditioner, that it was a cardinal rule of hair care, but it's not. Whether your should use conditioner, meaning will conditioner help your hair stay healthy, is another matter and is more subjective to the individual and their hair type.

Many times hair conditioner can supplement the other hair care products you're using and can improve the look and shine of your hair. There are so many different conditioners out there and all promise different things so you definitely have quite the variety. You could also talk to your hair stylist and see what he or she thinks about what's best for your hair. I live in a relatively dry climate and my hair tends to dry out easily and sometimes (especially in the winter) will have a lot of static all the time because it's so dry. I therefore occasionally use a very moisturizing conditioner. I don't use it every time I shower because then my hair would be too smooth and unable to hold any curl, but if I know I'm going for the sleek and shiny look, I'll definitely put in conditioner to tame my hair.

Conditioner is really a personalized product. There are all types of conditioners for any kind of hair type or malady, and you have complete discretion over when and how often you use it. Sometimes I think my hair is doing okay and so I opt out of using the conditioner, but on other days I see that my hair could calm down a bit and so I put a little in when I shower. I don't have a pattern to my hair conditioning—it's completely up to me. Conditioner definitely gives you more options for achieving the look and health you want in your hair and it's up to you how and when you use it. It's a product made just for you!
