What Eyebrow Shape is Best?

Written by Charlotte Wood (last updated October 18, 2021)

We all want eyebrows like the stars, but sometimes the Hollywood eyebrow is not what would flatter us most or produce the effect we want. There's the curved look, the flat look, and the "thing" look, but what would make your eyes pop? The many different face shapes and eyebrow shapes have special combinations that really make a bang; the problem is figuring out what works best for you.

Today's most desired eyebrow shape is the curved look—the long eyebrow and the dramatic arch produce a most desirable brow effect. However, this may not be the best look for you. The curved eyebrow serves to accent your facial features, giving your face more definition and depth. This eyebrow shape looks best on oval faces, bringing out the facial highlights and creating a stunningly dramatic look. Round eyebrows, a branch off from the curved, arched brows, don't add definition as much as they add an innocent, childlike quality.

Other popular eyebrow looks are the flat eyebrow (a last resort) and the thin eyebrow (which can hold any shape; the thinness of the brow achieves a different effect from the filled-in look). If you have a round face, you may want some sharper angles to give your face more depth and therefore should go for the curved, arched eyebrows. If you have a more square, angular face shape, rounder eyebrows would look best to soften your look.

After you decide on an eyebrow shape, you can go for further effect. Full-looking eyebrows are the most common and I believe most generally flattering. They give a sophisticated air that can go either professional or casual and doesn't create a harsh first impression. Thin eyebrows, while sometimes coming off harsh, can also achieve the sophisticated look. If you have delicate, wispy features and want to show that off, thin eyebrows may be the way to go. However, remember that "thin" does not mean "one pencil line." Thin eyebrows still need some depth to them and drawing one curved line with a makeup pencil over your eye is not an eyebrow—it's a misplaced line on your face. Make your thin eyebrows look natural yet polished.

Now that you know what shape works best, go out and perfect those eyebrows!
