Different Kinds of Hair Styling Products
Written by Debra Wyatt (last updated September 7, 2022)
There are so many different types of hair products available for styling your hair, that it is often times overwhelming. There are professional hair styling products as well as discount hair styling products. Professional hair styling products are available at beauty salons while the discount products are usually national brands and are sold at drug stores and other retail stores. While the products are usually similar in many ways the main difference is the price. The products that are sold at the beauty salons do cost more; there are a few professional products that are worth the extra price.
The overwhelming part comes when trying to decide which product it is that you need for styling your hair, and what price you pay. When you begin to search for your product you begin to read the label on the products and find out that the label really doesn't help. By learning more about the various types of hair styling products you should be able to make your selection faster and with more confidence.
Here are four basic hair styling products. Knowing what they are and what they are used for will help with the decision making process.
- Mousse. Mousse is also called styling foam. This is packaged under pressure and will expand when it is releases. Out of all the different types of hair styling products mousse is the lightest. Use on all types of hair except for dry hair; the alcohol in mousse can cause damage to dry hair. There are some mousse products available that also include a leave-in conditioner.
- Gel. Out of all the different types of hair styling products hair gel is the most versatile. Gel is available in both spray and direct application. For a quick over-all covering the spray version is best. With direct application you have to work the gel into your hair with your hands. Out of the two types of gel the direct application has more holding power and is great for hair styles that require sleek shapes or for "scrunching" curls.
- Glossing. Glossing or polishing drops are a silicone-based hair styling product used to help eliminate frizzy hair. You may find this same product labeled as anti-frizz serum. This product can be used on wet or dry hair.
- Pomade. Pomade is generally the same thing as wax. This is a great product to style short or dry hair, especially if you want sculpted hairstyles. Pomade feels and looks greasy in the can but once it is worked into the hair it will give hair a nice sheen. Pomade feels heavy on the hair and it usually takes more than one shampoo to remove from your hair. This is one of the best styling products that can be used for holding the hair in place.
Know with just a little more information you will be able to make a better decision on which hair product you want to use.
