Using a Flat Iron

Written by Debra Wyatt (last updated March 13, 2020)

You can change your hair style quickly and easily by using a flat iron. While flat irons are usually used to straighten you hair, they can also make quick curls. Using a flat iron can help you style your hair quicker. Learning how is easy.

If you haven't purchases your flat iron yet, be sure to purchase a flat iron with a ceramic plate. The ceramic flat irons will diffuse the heat better than the metal ones which will cause less damage to your hair.

Items that you will need:

  • Flat Iron
  • Blow Dryer
  • Straightening Balm
  • Heat Protection Spray
  • Comb
  • Old Toothbrush
  • Serum Gloss
  • Hair Spray

You always want to start out with clean, dry hair. This means completely dry from the tips of your hair all the way down to the roots of your hair. Don't add any hair spray or styling gel before using your flat iron. You will create problems and possibly damage your hair and flat iron if you do.

Once your hair is completely dried add a straightening balm to your hair. The straightening balm helps to protect the hair from being damaged and will also help to eliminate hair frizz. The straightening balm will not gum up your flat iron like the styling gel and hair spray will.

You will want to further protect your hair by applying a heat protection spray to your hair. Be sure to coat all the strands of your hair. Your hair needs to be dried again. Part your hair into four sections and blow dry your hair in the direction that you want it to lay.

Read the directions from the instruction manual on how to use your flat iron, as each one is different. You will want to be sure that you set your flat iron on the correct temperature. You will also want to double check on how long you will want to keep your hair in the flat iron. If you keep it in too long than you can actually burn your hair.

Using a comb separate your hair into a section from about one to two inches. Start at the bottom of your hair and work towards the top of the head. Take that section of hair and get as close as you can get to the scalp, then clamp down on the iron. Gently and slowly pull the iron down the full length of the hair. (Again the instructions will tell you how long to hold the flat iron on your hair.) Repeat with each section of hair until you are finished.

Once you are finished with the flat iron take the serum gloss and rub it into your hands and run the palms of your hands over your hair. This gives your hair some extra shine and will also help to keep it in place.

If your hair has a tendency to frizz up—especially at the hairline—a simple little trick is to spray your old toothbrush with hair spray and then gently brush the frizzy hair down.
