Choosing the Best Black Dress

Written by Doris Donnerman (last updated August 19, 2020)

If clothes were your friends, than the basic black dress would be your best friend. This simple little dress can go from casual, to business, and then on to formal all in the same day by simply changing the accessories. The perfect little black dress is a staple for every woman's wardrobe, and is one of the most versatile garments that you can own. This classic little black dress actually has been dated back to 1920 and Coco Chanel is given credit to making it a wardrobe must, and it has been in fashion ever since.

There are a few things that should be taken into consideration when it comes to purchasing the perfect black dress. The basic black dress should flatter you, so you will want to pay close attention to things like the style of the dress along with how the dress looks on you. Also important is the type of neckline shape it has. Here's what to look for:

  • Material. Choose a quality material that will last for years. If the dress is made out of cashmere or light wool it can also be worn during any season.
  • Style. You want to choose a dress that is timeless and not trendy. An A-line or a wrap is more of a timeless style. Stay with styles that compliment your own individual shape.
  • Hemline. The best length for the black dress is with the hemline right at the knee. When the hemline is longer or shorter than the knee, it will limit the dress' versatility.
  • Neckline. You want the neckline to flatter the shape of your face. Typically, a round face looks slimmer in a v-neck style, an oblong face looks better with a high neckline, and oval faces look good in almost any neckline. If you are not sure what shape your face really is, choose a v-neck style. It usually looks great on almost everyone, as long as it's not too deep.

Before buying the dress think about the different accessories that you may already own that may complement it. Simple and classic jewelry is always a good choice to be used as an accessory. This includes items such as a simple gold or silver chain necklace or a strand of pearls. Basically, everything else that you wear with your little black dress will add to the look that you are seeking.

When looking for your dress there are a couple of things that you should beware of such as creative cuts and ruffles. The more detail that is added to the dress the harder it is to be versatile.
