Appropriately named, foundation is the base of a bright youthful face. When used correctly it evens out the skin tone, hides blemishes, and gives a polished look to the face. Makeup technology has advanced in the recent years bringing new products to the public. Foundations range from tinted moisturizers, to classic liquids, to the newer mineral products. It is easier than ever to obtain the perfect product for your skin type and color. Knowing what you want from your foundation is the key to finding the right one. Here are the most important factors in choosing a foundation:

  • Determine how much coverage you want. Cream and liquid foundations will provide more coverage for scars, blemishes, and freckles. Don't jump straight for the creams just yet; sheer foundations can hide many imperfections. Sheer coverage can be attained with tinted moisturizers and powders. You can achieve a natural look with all of them, be sure to choose one you are comfortable with.
  • Find the product for your skin type. Whether your skin is dry, oily, or a combination there is a foundation for you. The manufacturer usually includes skin type on the labels. Creams are usually best for dry skin because of the higher oil content. Powders or cream to powders can balance out oily skin. Liquid and mineral foundations work well with most skin types. Play around with the different mediums to find what you like best.
  • Match the color of the foundation to your natural skin color. To do this you want to look at the color of the skin just below your jaw or the inside of your arm. These areas don't get much sun and are a pretty good indication of the color you want. It may not look right in the bottle but remember that you will only be using a little and the color won't be as concentrated. You want to choose a color slightly darker in the summer. Be careful not to go too dark or it won't look natural.

Cosmetic counters are a great place to find help. They can customize colors for you and usually have samples available. Don't be afraid to try again if you don't like your first choice. Makeup is all about enhancing you and feeling your best find what works for you.

I would suggest visiting a Sephora store, or deparment in a JC Penney store. They carry all different types of makeup product lines, an you don't need an appointment to have makeup applied to you.
