The Best Tanning Lotion for You

Written by Doris Donnerman (last updated May 20, 2020)

Summer is the time when people are outside and active. Summer clothes, time at the beach, summer fun! Along with the fun and activity comes summer tans. Sometimes tanning can be kind of difficult, however; you may have a complexion that's not conducive to tanning. My skin doesn't tan very well, so I usually just stay the same color all year round. If this is your situation, what is your solution? Tanning lotion! Now the question is, what tanning lotion is best for you?

First, let's take a look at the basics of tanning lotion. Essentially, tanning lotion helps your skin tan, rather than burn or not tan at all. It's like a "tan stimulant," if you want to think about it that way. Tanning lotion can be especially helpful if you have a hard time tanning, or if you don't want to go through the painful process of sunburn to tan, then tanning lotion may be the perfect thing for you.

Tanning lotion, as opposed to sunblock, amplifies the effects of UV radiation so you tan quicker. There are definite risks, however, associated with tanning lotion. UV rays can definitely harm you, burning you and even, over time, going as far as causing skin cancer. If you choose to use tanning lotion, use it with care and caution.

The tanning lotion you use is largely dependent on how often you tan and how much of a tan you want to get. If you want an intensely brown tan, then get a higher powered tanning lotion. If you simply want a bronze glow to your skin, then opt for the tanning lotion with a lesser intensity. Picking the best tanning lotion for you is mostly all about you evaluating and buying according to your tanning needs.

Another thing to keep in mind is that true success in almost any cosmetic endeavor comes through a little bit of trial and error. You probably won't find the beset tanning lotion for you on your first try. You might have to try a couple different brands, formulations, and intensities. Picking a tanning lotion isn't hard—it's finding the best one that can prove frustrating. Persevere in your quest for the best tanning lotion, and rest assured, you'll find it.

So, now that summer's here, you've got your tanning lotion and you're ready to hit the sun. Get tan, look great, and have a sizzling summer!
