Getting a Tan without the Sun

Written by Charlotte Wood (last updated November 18, 2019)

Summertime usually means for many people going out and getting tan; many people see being tan as being sexy, and who doesn't want to be sexy, right? Tanning is most commonly done by simple exposure to the sun and UV radiation; however, UV rays can be quite harmful to the human body. If your concerns about negative effects of UV radiation outweigh your desire for bronze summer skin, then don't lose all hope for a tan—you can still achieve a tanned look without the sun. Sunless tanning is a new cosmetic frontier and can give you the look you want without the risks associated with UV rays.

One of the ways to sunless tan is to use a tanning bed; however, the risks associated with tanning beds are pretty similar to actual UV rays from the sun. While effective and intense, tanning beds, if you're looking to avoid the negative effects of sunbathing, aren't the best. There definitely are other ways of achieving the suntanned look without the sun, and those ways are usually cheaper and definitely safer than actual sun or tanning beds.

There are several sprays and lotions and foams out there specifically designed to give you a suntanned look without you actually having to go out and expose yourself to harmful UV rays. The sprays, lotions, and foams all work to give your skin a nice bronze tone to it; depending on the brand and the quality, you might end up with a bad orange tinge. You need to pick your sunless tanner safely, or else you'll end up with not such a great looking fake tan.

One of my favorite sunless tanners is Jergen's tanning lotion; you simply put lotion on daily and after about a week, you have a healthy, tan glow to your skin! Other sunless tanners work great, and you just have to remember to be patient while the formula settles into your skin; you also don't want to create funny lines on your skin, so in that case, make sure to apply the formula evenly over your skin.

Using sunless tanner is a great way to improve the tan quality of your skin, and helps you achieve both aims of taking care of your body and looking nice and tan for the summer! Have a great time at the beach!
