Picking Flattering Shorts

Written by Charlotte Wood (last updated June 10, 2020)

The weather is finally starting to feel like summer, and it's time to break out your summertime wardrobe. It's such a great feeling to be able to start wearing your short-sleeved blouses, your capris, your sandals, and even your shorts. Shorts fell out of style for a while, but recently knee-length shorts have come back into vogue. While the new twenty-first century shorts can definitely be fun to wear and stylish, there is always the potential that they won't look so great. If shorts don't look so great on you, chances are you simply need to find the pair that really fits. Shorts can be great summer gear, and you just need to know how to pick ones that are flattering.

The first thing you need to do is throw out your shorts from the nineties. If you want your shorts to look flattering today, you need to get rid of your shorts from last decade. The pleats, the funny pockets, the wide legs—it all needs to go. Shorts today don't have pleats and fit the leg more than shorts did ten years ago. Shorts that will be most flattering on you will better fit your thigh; wide shorts won't do so much for your look. You can get shorts that fit closer than other shorts; if you feel uncomfortable with tighter-fitting shorts, then there are looser-fit shorts that might make you feel more comfortable.

Shorts aren't too flattering if they're too short. Everyone has thighs and usually we don't really want to see them. The truth is, however skinny you are, so much leg is never incredibly attractive. While short shorts might have been the fashion fifteen years ago, they aren't now. What's in style now is actually shorts that go roughly to the knee. They come in a variety of colors and patterns, allowing you to own several pair, hence expanding your summer wardrobe.

Summer trends are always part of the fun of summer, and (whether this is a good thing or an annoying thing) the trends always change from summer to summer. If you want to update your summer closet, then shorts are definitely something to invest in. If you go about picking your shorts in the right way, then the summer won't be the only thing that's hot! Toss out the pleats and wide legs and wear shorts that are close fitting, knee length, and full of color, pattern, and style!
