Hairstyles for Formal Occasions

Written by April Reinhardt (last updated October 3, 2022)

Have you an event that requires formal clothing? A wedding? An anniversary dinner? A charity auction? Perhaps you have a date for a Prom, or are asked to attend a retirement dinner for your CEO. If you answered yes to any of those questions, then you'll most likely want to look sophisticated in elegant attire, complimented by an appropriate formal hairstyle.

Whether your hair is short or long, curly or straight, there are many hairstyles from which to choose for formal occasions. A good place to start is to look at pictures of hairstyles of movie stars or fashion models in magazines or online. Hair salons also are a good reference source, as they carry many hairstyle magazines.

If you have long hair, the following hairstyles will be appropriate for your formal event:

  • Fanned updo, French twist, or banana curl.
  • Ballerina bun or nape knot.
  • Modified updo.
  • French braids.

Updos, twists, buns, and knots all begin with a basic ponytail, secured tightly with an elastic band. Apply product to the remaining hair for a sleek hold.

Short hair can also look elegant with the following hairstyles:

  • Sleek bob
  • Tousled curls
  • Modified wispy bob
  • Pinned curls

You can add hair extensions to your short hair to create the effect of an updo, to have long curls, and even achieve a French twist.

Since your formal occasion dictates precision in achieving your look, having someone help you complete your hairstyle is recommended, especially if you have long hair. No matter the length of your hair, it is best to not work with freshly washed hair, as it tends to be softer and will fall out of place easily. If you must wash your hair on the day of your event, there are products you can use to add volume such as mousse, gels, and shines.

Another way to accomplish a new look for your formal occasion is to have hair highlights professionally done, change your hair color, have a permanent wave for straight hair, or if you have curly hair, straighten it. With all hairstyles, placing garnishments of flowers or jeweled hair clips adds a dramatic effect.

Try out your hairstyle a week in advance of the event. That way, you can make sure that the hairstyle you've chosen will compliment your face shape, skin tone, and formal clothing. If you plan on having your hair professionally done, have a backup plan to do it at home, should your stylist have to cancel at the last minute.
