Flattering Shoes for Evening Wear

Written by Charlotte Wood (last updated April 11, 2022)

It's a Friday night and you have a night planned out on the town. For your special evening, you have your entire outfit planned, down to the shade of eye shadow you're going to put on and the color you want your toenails to be. You're only stuck on one thing: which shoes should you wear? For the average woman, choosing the right pair of shoes can be quite the process, especially when the average woman has a wide selection of shoes to choose from. When you're getting dolled up in evening wear, you want just the right shoes, and so here are a few tips for how to pick the perfect, flattering shoes for your evening out.

The thing to keep in mind when choosing the most flattering shoes for your evening ensemble is your outfit focus. By outfit focus, I mean the most accentuated part of your outfit or look. If you're focusing most of your attention on you makeup, if you want your face to give the bang to your look, then you'll want everything else to be a bit more toned down and simplified. If you have earrings and a necklace that really make your outfit pop, then you'll want to have modest makeup.

If you want your shoes to pull together your outfit, then pick shoes that make more of a statement. Shoes that make a statement are usually a bit more loud than your traditional shoe. This may mean your shoes are a completely different color than anything else in your ensemble, they have a particularly noticeable embellishment, or have a striking style that's uncommon. If you choose to have shoes be the focal point of your look, then make sure your shoes achieve that punch you're looking for.

You also need to consider the propriety of the shoe. Evening wear itself is definitely more upscale and dressed up than most other styles of dress. If your evening wear is on the more casual end of dressy, then make sure your shoes reflect that look. You want the overall tone and feel of your look to be uniform. If you're going for the classic, little black dress look, your shoes should be sleek and strappy like your dress. If you decide to pull off the chunky jewelry look, then it's okay to wear a chunkier shoe with your evening wear.

The key to picking flattering shoes for your evening wear is simply keeping in mind what you wan the focal point of your look to be, and making sure that your shoes fall in line with the overall look you're trying to achieve. Picking flattering shoes for your evening is by no means difficult—you just need to make sure that you follow those two simple guidelines!
