Choosing Hair Care Products

Written by Doris Donnerman (last updated June 23, 2021)

Determining which of the many products available for the care of your hair need not be a confusing or time-consuming process. By following these four simple guidelines you'll have the ability to determine your own hair care destiny.

  1. Do not base your decision solely off the recommendation of your friends. Considering that each person's hair is different, what works for one person is not likely to work for another person. Such factors as hair thickness, texture, length and natural oil content will all affect how each different product interacts with your hair.
  2. Consulting with your personal stylist is the best way to obtain a full list of available products that would work best for your hair. This will ensure that you have the widest possible range in price and product type. Ask questions like, "How will these products interact with any hair coloring that I have had done?", "Will this product deliver what it says it will?", "Is this product easy to use?", and "What are the price ranges for these products?" These questions give you a good starting point for basing your decision, but should not be the absolute end in your process.
  3. A word of warning as you go about your quest: When it comes to hair-care products there is often no correlation between price and results—expense does not necessarily equate to quality. Considering that there are just as many inexpensive products as there are high-priced ones, you will need to ensure that you know exactly what you are wanting when you make your purchasing decision. This is definitely a situation where the buyer must beware. Be aware that not all products will deliver what they promise. (Strangely, there is no legal requirement that hair care products deliver what is promised or implied by their advertisements.)
  4. Have patience in making your judgment. Considering the sheer numbers of products that are available, it will take time to do proper research on each and every item on your list. Do not expect to reach a final choice in just one or two hours of looking. This will be a process that should realistically be expected to take several days, maybe even a few weeks. While it may be frustrating at times to go through this process, it is one that pays off in the results provided.
