Styles that Make You Look Slimmer

Written by Charlotte Wood (last updated August 4, 2021)

I hate it when one day I wear an outfit that looks great and slims my figure but the next day for some reason I look wider and I feel unattractive. Clothes have a greater impact on how our figures appear than we may realize, thus making it so we need to choose our wardrobes and outfits carefully. Clothes can sometimes serve as an optical illusion, distorting our appearance into something that it's not. There are ways however to combat this cruel hoax that is bad fashion and here's how.

A common mantra in the fashion industry, wearing dark colors really is more slimming than pastels or lighter shades. Lighter shades tend to accentuate bumps and bodily imperfections while darker colors like black, chocolate, and red help blend imperfections, smoothing the body better, and giving a better overall presentation. Try to avoid clothing with horizontal stripes as that tends to visually widen the body which is the exact opposite result of what you want. Any patterns that are too large or gaudy will also make you appear heavier than you are—always something to avoid!

One of the biggest and most important tips for slimming clothes is wear clothes that actually fit. This may seem obvious, but wearing clothes either too small or too large will not improve your image. If you wear clothes that are too small then you'll definitely look too big for them and consequently appear heavier. If you wear clothes that are too big, the extra fabric doesn't cover up or hide what you don't want others to see; it accentuates them and even creates new spots. Wear clothes that fit, regardless of your size.

More specifically regarding clothes, wear pants that are long and are a wide, straight leg or a boot cut. That will elongate not only your legs, but also your whole body. Don't purchase pants in a clingy, synthetic fabric. The pant will just stick to your leg, emphasizing the thigh rather than slimming it down. Pointy toed shoes are also a good way to may yourself appear slim. If you're still concerned about looking slimmer in your clothes, you can always opt for the tummy tuck jeans or the control top panty hose. There are many companies out there that sell clothes especially for people who want to minimize and hide their heavier parts.

Summary:

  • Do wear darker colors
  • Do wear wide, straight leg or boot cut pants
  • Do wear pointy toed shoes
  • Do wear the right size
  • Don't wear horizontal stripes
  • Don't wear clothes that are either too big or too small
  • Don't wear clingy fabrics

One of the easiest ways to make yourself seem skinnier is to distract the eye in a way. Accentuate your positive features and most attractive physical qualities. If people are notice your assets they probably won't take the time to search out your not-so-flattering parts.
