Applying Foundation

Summary: Foundation is a makeup essential, the key that brings a whole makeup look together. If you're unsure about how to apply foundation, here are a few tips to get you started and looking great!

For many women, applying makeup is a daily ritual that each woman personalizes for herself. There are those specific things you do to apply your mascara, your blush, your concealer, your eye shadow, and your foundation. Foundation, however, can be a bit intimidating, and you may not be sure how your daily foundation-applying routine should go. If you're stumped on foundation (which is the foundation of makeup application), then here are a few tips to get you started.

The methods used to apply foundations vary according to what kind of foundation you use. There are a few different types of foundation and fall into two main categories: liquid and powder. Liquid foundation is a bit trickier to apply skillfully, and mistakes when applying liquid foundation look worse in the final result. The first thing you need to do with liquid foundation is make sure that the shade of your foundation is the right shade for your skin tone. Blending is the key to liquid foundation application, and if you don't have the right shade of liquid foundation then your makeup will not end up looking so great. Try these ideas:

  • Apply small dabs of the liquid foundation over various parts of your face.
  • Using the tips of your fingers, gently rub the foundation in and blend the foundation well over your face.
  • Make sure to blend the foundation evenly over all parts of your face, and you also should make sure that the foundation blends well with the rest of your face, especially the neck area.

With powder foundation, application is simpler. You'll want a good makeup brush that picks up a lot of foundation from the pallet and spreads the foundation evenly over your face. Foundation powder is usually a bit heavier than regular powder and usually comes in a compact form. When you're applying powder foundation, get enough on your brush to ensure a noticeable coat of foundation, and use the brush to spread it evenly over your face. You probably won't have to worry too much about the foundation line along your jaw line, but do make sure that the shade you use is as close as possible to your natural skin tone.

Applying foundation is a necessary part of makeup application in general, and many of you do it everyday. If you want your day-to-day makeup to look great, then you need to start from the beginning—your foundation application has to be knockout. Now that you know the tips and tricks of foundation application, you should have no problem, and your everyday makeup will be a hit!
