Choosing a Great Prom Hairstyle

Summary: Prom is one of those nights you look forward to all growing up and you want it to be perfect. You need to pay attention to every detail of your appearance and your hair is no exception.

Prom is one of the biggest nights of high school and you want to look perfect. The whole experience of prom is one that is exciting, nerve wracking, and sometimes stressing. You have to find a dress, jewelry, shoes, and do your makeup, nails, and hair. In this big high school event you want every aspect of your appearance to be perfect from the color of your toenails to the tiara on the top of your head. Choosing the best prom hairstyle is key to beginning what could be one of the best memories of your high school career.

The first thing to consider when choosing what kind of hair to have is what effect you want to create. With everything combined—dress, shoes, makeup, hair—what statement do you want to make with your prom ensemble? Your hairstyle should usually follow suit with everything else in your presentation and you should also consider what you want to accent if anything. If you are accenting your makeup for example, you could simplify your hairdo. If on the other hand you'd rather focus on your hair, you could keep your makeup elegant yet understated.

You don't have to accent any aspect of your ensemble if you don't want to though; you can use your entire outfit—dress, makeup, and hair—to make a head-turning statement. If want a more audacious ensemble try a dress with a trendy (rather than traditional) cut in a bright, vivid color, bold makeup, and a more daring hairstyle. On the other hand, if you want to go in a more simple direction, choose a light and delicate dress in a paler color, subtle makeup, and wear your hair soft and down. It's always easy to go traditional and elegant as well. Find the long dress with the full dress (usually any color will work, but blacks, chocolate, blues, and pinks are especially stunning), the soft yet noticeable makeup, and the up-do with curls and rhinestones.

Another consideration is whether to wear your hair up or down; both have their merits. Wearing it up is much more traditional and definitely something different from what you may normally do with your hair. Having it down however can also look very elegant. Either in a very straight look or in curls, wearing your hair down can make quite the statement. My preference however is wearing it up; especially when you get it done in a salon, it usually stays pretty well and doesn't get in your face. My experience when wearing my hair down (especially in a fancy hairdo), is that it goes flat if curled and sometimes doesn't stay cute when straight. When you wear it up (in my experience), you have a better chance of keeping it the way you want.

You can now have the perfect look for prom; you have the dress, shoes, makeup, and now the hair! Have fun on this most memorable night!
