When to Call the Dermatologist

Summary: Dermatology deals with issues affecting the skin like severe acne, skin cancer and reoccurring rashes. Seeking a specialist can expedite diagnosis and successful treatment.

I hate to go to the doctor, so when I need to go I want to see the person most qualified to care for my ailment. I am fortunate that my insurance does not require a referral to see a specialist so I can see the type of doctor I need based on my symptoms.

Skin is the body's largest organ. It is responsible for protecting the rest of our organs. It functions as a heating and cooling unit to regulate body temperature. Care from a dermatologist can help keep skin, nails and hair healthy looking.

The follow is a list of reason to consider treatment by a dermatologist:

  • Genetics. A family's predisposition for certain diseases like skin cancer seeing a specialist would be warranted.
  • Rashes. Rashes that won't go away or rashes that heal then reoccur should be seen by a dermatologist.
  • Skin discolorations. Moles that have changed in color, size, texture or shape may warrant a visit to a specialist. Birthmarks and age spots can also be treated in the dermatologist's office.
  • Skin conditions. Rosecea, eczema or psorisasis are best treated by a dermatologist. Excessively dry feet and cracked heels can be improved with treatment from a dermatologist.
  • Acne. Severe cases of acne should be seen by a specialist. Dermatologists can help manage ongoing breakouts as well as heal scarring left by acne cysts.
  • Skin tone. Fair skinned patients can also possess additional risk factors and should visit a dermatologist routinely.
  • Tattoo removal. Dermatologists can be instrumental in the removal of unwanted tattoos.
  • Hair. Hair removal or transplants can be facilitated through a dermatologists care.
  • Spider veins. The appearance of spider veins can be improved.
  • Anti-aging treatments. Fillers can be injected to minimize crow's feet and laugh lines. Microderm abrasion and chemical peels can enhance a more youthful appearance and help reverse the signs of sun damage.

Dermatologist offices can be a tremendous resource for advice on good skin, nail and hair care, anti-aging procedures, treatment for serious skin diseases and early detection and treatment of skin cancers. There are literally thousands of reasons to seek a dermatologist's expertise. They are highly trained individuals specializing in the care of the myriads ailments ranging from cosmetic to life threatening. Before visiting a dermatologist, check to see what his practice specializes in and if those services are covered by insurance.
