Getting a Pedicure

Summary: Sometimes you just need a moment to relax and think and be alone. There are many activities to help you achieve that objective and a pedicure is one of the best. Give yourself a needed break and some pretty toes at the same time!

I have one of those personalities that most definitely necessitates alone time; I know myself well enough to know that I need just a bit of solitude each day to rejuvenate and recharge my batteries. Sometimes I read, sometimes I watch TV or write a letter, and sometimes I do my nails. It's a luxurious experience to have a pedicure, one that lets you just relax and allows yourself to be pampered. Whenever I do something that improves some physical aspect of myself (whether that be a pedicure, manicure, or haircut), it makes me feel better about myself. I feel pretty and more confident. Whether it's in the salon or at home watching a movie, getting a pedicure is a great way to boost your morale.

The basic procedure of a pedicure is essentially the same, whether you're in a salon or your living room. You give yourself a clean slate by first removing all nail polish. Before soaking the feet (which is usually my favorite part), the nails are trimmed and shaped. After your skin has soaked for a few minutes, you (or the manicurist) takes one foot out and works on the cuticles and the second time around, the calluses are evened out a bit. Once the feet are removed from the water basin, usually some lotion is put on to add a finishing touch. After the feet are taken care of, the nails receive a bit of attention with buffing and painting.

I usually have my pedicures at home while I watch reruns of "Everybody Loves Raymond," and that is my preferred way. Some people would rather go into the salon because of the spa treatment but some others like myself don't mind administering myself a little TLC.

When you do your pedicure at home, make sure you have the proper equipment. You don't need a foot spa, but I sure enjoy having one and make sure you have the cuticle equipment (e.g. cuticle clippers, orange stick) and the callus file is nice to have as well. You can also feel free to invest in some lotions and potions to put in the water to improve your relaxing experience.

The best part about a pedicure, or any other self-indulgent beauty activity for that matter, is that it gives you "you time." Regardless of whether you can go for days without a moment to think or if you're like I am and you'll go crazy without some solitude, personal pampering is a great way to get in that privacy and give yourself a treat at the same time!
