Prom Fashion Basics for Guys

Summary: When you choose your tie, belt, socks, and shoes, make sure that those accessories compliment your outfit, as well as your date's dress. Make sure that your trousers are long enough, but not dragging on the floor when you walk. If you are standing, the hem should cover the back of your shoes, touching the top of the shoe sole. Shoes should be free of scuffs and dents, with new laces if they are tied shoes.

Although dressing for the Prom isn't nearly as complicated for guys as it is for girls, there are some fashion basics that every guy should know when it comes time for the big night. After asking a girl to the Prom, you need to know that your ensemble for the evening must coordinate with your date's dress. And if renting a tuxedo is beyond your budget, it doesn't mean that you need to sacrifice fashion because you're short on money. No matter your budget, here are some great tips for Prom fashion basics for guys:

  • Colors. Coordinate your clothing with that of your date's dress. Before considering renting a tux or selecting a suit from your closet, make sure that it compliments the color and style of her dress. If you can't afford a tux, perhaps you can accessorize using the colors of her dress; rent a cummerbund, buy a new tie, or select a shirt to compliment her choice of color.
  • Co-ordinate. If you are renting a tux, bring your Prom date with you so that the two of you can discuss with the store personnel the colors you want, fabric choices, vest and cummerbund options, as well as shirt, tie, and shoes. Make sure that you make an appointment for your tux fitting at least one month before the Prom to ensure that there are choices available, and allowing enough time for alterations.
  • Jackets. If you aren't renting a tux, at least wear something formal. You must wear a jacket. It doesn't need to be a tuxedo jacket-vest-cummerbund combination, but it does need to be a structured jacket, with crisp lines. Don't rummage through your Dad's closet to choose an over-sized suit jacket. Instead, make sure that your jacket fits properly; the shoulder seam must sit at the top of the shoulder, and the jacket must button around you. Even if the jacket isn't part of a suit combination, make sure that it compliments your trousers.
  • Slacks. Once you've decided on a jacket, choose a pair of slacks. If you are renting a tux, that ensemble is already complete. If you opt for separates, choose wisely a pair of dress slacks to compliment your jacket. The best colors for Prom night are dark washes such as black, brown, or navy. Forego the pinstripes and plaids since the focus of the evening should be your date's dress.

Accessorize your outfit to complete the look with a dress shirt. You must wear a long-sleeved dress shirt with your jacket. Cufflinks are optional, but can help you look more polished for the formal evening.
