Getting Rid of Rough Skin on Your Heels

Summary: With the daily wear and tear we inflict on our feet, it's no wonder there's rough skin all over our heels. If you deal with rough skin on your heels, then here are a few ways to help you get rid of it.

If your feet are anything like mine, then they're rough. My feet develop calluses pretty easily and usually, they're hard, tough calluses. I don't even think that I'm that hard on my feet, but I guess just the daily wear and tear on my feet takes its toll. Sometimes my calluses are relatively smooth, but other times they get pretty rough and snag on my clothes and socks. If you are one of those people like me who deal with rough skin on your feet all the time, then these tips are for you. Here are a few ways that you can get rid of the rough skin on your heels.

Sometimes when your feet get rough because of calluses, then it's tempting to pick at your calluses. While this is often an oddly satisfying feeling, picking the hardened dead skin off your feet, and sometimes even effective in removing the rough skin from your heels, it's not the best way to go about getting rid of your rough skin. By picking, you only really aggravate the situation because you make the skin uneven and even more rough. Put simply, if you have rough skin, don't pick at it because you'll just make it worse.

The way to deal with rough skin on your heels is effective, but does take time. The best way to get rid of the rough skin on your heels is to use a file of sorts. You can find various sorts of files and—it makes me kind of cringe to say it—grater-like tools that are great for scraping off your dead, rough, and callused skin. The best way to start this removal process is to soak your feet in warm water. Put a bit of mild soap in the water so you can clean your feet, and allow your feet to soak so the rough skin on your heels will soften up a bit. Once your feet are nice and soaked and soft, take out one foot from the foot bath, grab the file, and simply file the rough skin on your feet. The calluses should come off pretty easily because of the soak, and you may have to take some time to really get the calluses and rough skin completely off, but keep filing and the rough skin eventually will be gone. You may want to alternate filing each foot, so you can soak one while filing the other and keep the skin soft.

Once you're finished filing your feet, take some heavy lotion and put it all over your feet. This will help the skin dry smoother, so rough skin won't be so quick to develop. You should always remember that just one round of soaking and filing won't keep rough skin off your heels forever; after more wear and tear, your feet will develop those calluses again, and if you want smooth feet, you're going to have to continually treat your feet.
