Picking Eyeglasses to Flatter Your Face

Summary: Now that you're out of the second grade, you need not be "four eyes," but can use your second set to highlight your features and accentuate your assets. Eyeglasses are an accessory and one, if chosen for your face shape, flatters and complements your look.

Eyeglasses can be fun to wear and can have a positive and powerful impact on your appearance. Using eyeglasses, you can make the statement you want about yourself. When you go to the optician's you see dozens, perhaps even hundreds, of eyeglass frames to choose from and sometimes that choice can be a bit overwhelming. One style of frame may look great on your best friend but it just doesn't seem to work with you. How do you know what glasses will flatter you and which ones won't? The answer is in knowing the shape of your face and which styles will best enhance your features.

The most common type of facial shape is oval and that's luckily, the most easy to fit. Oval faced people can wear just about any frame or style they want. You have many more options and really for you, it comes all down to personal preference and taste. The only thing to remember is that you don't want frames that overpower your features; choose something to complement rather than dominate.

Square faces are pretty proportional and look best in softer shaped frames. A round oval shape softens the look of the face and distracts a bit more from the sharp angles in your face. Cat eye glasses however add a different dimension and are a bit more daring. Cat eye glasses on a square face make more of a statement and stand out more. If you have more vertical frames it will elongate your face and make it look a little strange; go for glasses that have more of a horizontal look to them.

Just like with a square face you want a rounder, softer feel, on a round face you want to add some angles and dimension. More angular frames also add balance to the face. Frames that are somewhat rectangular make the face appear slimmer rather than chubbier (which can be a problem for those with round faces). As with square faced people, horizontal frames slim the face better than vertical.

Heart shaped faces are a little more difficult to fit and a lot of it depends on the individual. This is a case where you can try whatever and whatever ends up looking good, go with it! In general, round, light colored frames bring more balance to your forehead and frames that have a wider base compensate for the narrower chin. With a heart shaped face, it's more hit or miss than with the other face shapes.

Now that you know what looks best and what will flatter you most, you don't have to feel daunted after an eye appointment, but rather you can feel full of opportunity and creativity. With so many options from which to choose and so many different ways to express yourself, it should be fun deciding which statement you want to make with your new frames!
